John Iriving, one of America's most prolific novelists, will be there (author of The World According to Garp, The Cider House Rules, A Prayer for Owen Meaney) along with Margaret Atwood, who's been shortlisted for the Booker five times (winning once) and a finalist for the Governor General's Award seven times (winning twice).
Click here and then on the video link to hear John discusss his writing process and his twelfth novel, Last Night in Twisted River, which will be launched at Wordfest in October.

A treat for fellow readers and writers
If you're able, consider making a trip to Alberta this fall to attend WordFest, the Banff-Calgary International Writers Festival.

I have always enjoyed Margaret Atwood's writing. Wish I could be there as I'd love to meet her.
Sounds like it's a great writers festival. I've heard of it before and have (of course) read John Irving's novels. My favorite was Cider House Rules.
This is quite exciting!
Thanks for this (found your blog via facebook and have been enjoying reading back through your posts)
Ahhhh, the life of a writer,
all festivals and retreats and conference.
Have fun. seriously.
So wish I could be there! Instead, I'll be attending my local one, Surry International Writers Conference which is fab but it would be so GREAT to meet you. Eventually we MUST attend the same conferences :)
I agree, Wendy!
Us Canadian writers must stick together and support one another.
Good to hear from you. Hope you're having a wonderful summer.
P.S. I've always wanted to do the Surrey conference. I hear it's great. If I weren't going to the Hawaii Writers Retreat/Conference in August, I'd sure consider it.
Victoria -- she is amazing, isn't she?
Nadine -- I loved the MOVIE Cider House rules. Sadly, I have yet to read the book.
Joanne -- nice to meet you!
Adam -- it's not what it seems, all glitz and glammer. I haven't been to a writers retreat or conference for 2 years. To be honest, writers spend so much solitary time doing what we do, these things become necessary now and then to maintain one's sanity! But yes, I will have fun. Promise.
I thought these events were just for writers! Do readers attend as well?
I read that Margaret Atwood was coming and am so excited. I've read a number of her books.
I'm looking forward to going.
I'm checking my calendar now...
I have a Irving story. Talk about a decent man - my high school roommates father was roommates with John Irving in college. When I first started writing, my friend called John Irving and asked for some advice for me and he was very kind in his response. And encouraging. Four years later, I have a book deal, in part because I didn't quit. And I have John Irving to thank for some of that tenacity. We all need a push, support, a shoulder - writing is so darn hard and getting published is hard and staying published I'm told is even harder! But isn't it wonderful too?
