Book talk, Camel Rides and IQ Tests

I spoke with a book club from Tampa tonight who went for drinks before we connected (who doesn't love celebratory readers, hmmm?) and after questions about The Penny Tree dried up here's what they asked:

Q: There's nothing more appealing than...?
A: A gentleman. I can't stand men with bad manners.

Q: Something you've always wanted to do but haven't is...
A: Ride a camel. No idea why, but I've spent years wanting to.

Q: Something my husband doesn't know about me is...
A: ...that for three years I've put the same IQ TEST IN A BOX in his stocking at Christmas and each year he says, "This is great!" then puts it aside and forgets I gave it to him. I'll keep re-gifting it until he says something. I'm aiming for five years straight.

Q: Books you've read recently that you enjoyed/admired...
A: The Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Pie Society
(a NYT bestseller, represented by my agent Liza Dawson)
The White Tiger by Aravind Adiga (Winner of the Man Booker)
Three Cups of Tea by Greg Mortenson (A true story)
Mr. Pip by Lloyd Jones (Finalist for the Man Booker Prize)

You have good taste in books!
I adored Three Cups of Tea.
Guess I'd better add Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Pie Society to my list

(mouthful of a title eh?)

My mom said that Potato Peel Pie book was incredible.

*snort* your poor DH
Maybe he's getting too much in his stocking to remember!

You could probably get a camel ride at a zoo somewhere in the US I`m sure. Google it.

How often do you talk with book clubs? A few each month? More?

I rode a camel as a kid. I love camels!!

I've ridden a camel, you're not missing too much, although it might depend on where you do it.

I loved Guernsey too, but haven't read the others.

That's too funny about your husband. I wonder if I could pull off something similar with mine...

Nadine -- I know, but I just love the book and once you read it the title fits perfectly.

Ramona -- The saddest part is that the author passed away before the book was published. It was therefore co-authored with her niece, who stepped in to help during the copy editing process. So so sad.

Barb -- *shrug* I'm not sure, but I want one. Not the sort where someone leads you around with a leash, either. I want to climb on and take off on my own, just me and the camel.

Adam -- Nah! I'm aiming for something more exicting, a faraway desert for example.

Kyla-dale -- Depends. Winter is always busier for me with book clubs than summer. I've done as many as 4-5/week when a novel first comes out.

In November I spoke with 5 for the entire month, none in December, and then six so far this month. It's steady, though, and that's great because it keeps readers interested in your current and upcoming work.

Mystery Robin -- I'm green with envy!

Patti -- I think you're right (see my comment above) Location is everything in my fantasy-like approach to this camel ride.

Janet -- Try it! I'm sure you could. Mine never reads my blog (he's just too busy) so I'm safe posting about it. I think it's pretty funny.

Holly,

Thanks for your brick donation. Thanks to the kindness of so many friends the tragedy of the fire does not seem so severe. I truly appreciate all of my blog world friends and this is not eh first time you've gone out of your way to help me. Many thanks and here's wishing you well in all your pursuits, including camel riding.

That's too funny about the stocking stuffer for hubby! My Mom does something similar with my Dad with his birthday card. Each year she updates how many times she's given it to him on the back. Sometimes in life, it's the little stuff :)
