Telling off the tooth fairy

Last week, my youngest lost yet another tooth and because he still believes, he slipped it under his pillow and went to sleep, but the tooth fairy forgot to leave him anything so the next morning we
had a grouchy kid at breakfast, mumbling and grumbling under his breath about how "she sure isn't
very good at her job."

My oldest reassured him, telling him when she forgets, she pays double the second night. This seemed to appease him, but then the tooth fairy forget YET AGAIN that night (she was tired, okay?!) and he was even less impressed the next day.

On the third night, when the tooth fairy finally got her act together and reached under his pillow with a five dollar bill,
she found this pleasant little note...

Holly,

I'm kind of a Grinch when it comes to those kinds of things. I never really understood the Tooth Fairy. For one thing, I'd hear other kids at school telling how much money they got and then when I counted my haul I wondered why my teeth were worth less than Christina's.

It all seemed rather dodgy to me.

So it is my husband's insistence on doing the Tooth Fairy tradition in our house. Once he forgot and I helped to soothe our son's disappointed feelings by saying that since he lost his tooth so late in the day that he missed the scheduling deadline and the route had already been created for the day.

That Dr. Mengele, er, the Tooth Fairy would be sure to have him on his/her schedule for the next night.

I had big problems understanding the Easter Bunny as well. I mean, what is the deal with a rabbit going all over and hiding eggs? Does he travel through underground tunnels to get to houses, and then what does he do in urban communities where there is concrete everywhere. Also, does the Easter Bunny carry a reallllly large basket to hold all the candy? At least Santa had transportation and a vehicle to carry his stuff.

Yes, I over analyzed things even as a child.

I hope you're staying warm up there, neighbor to the North!

I've done this too. But usually while said kid is watching TV or eating breakfast, I've slipped the money under the pillow.

Then, I ask, are you *sure* you looked under your pillow? She couldn't possibly have forgotten. Maybe you overlooked it.

Worked for me. ;)

He's right you know (cluck, cluck)
That tooth fairy isn't doing her job real well. Buck up, lady!

You're lucky. Another day and he might have sent Vinnie out to pay the tooth fairy a littel visit to show her what happens to those who don't pay on time.

This cracks me up because we have the WORST tooth fairy ever! At first it simply appeared that this was her first job but man, she never really got the hang of it. Now my son's like, "Okay, the tooth is going under the pillow so if you happen to see the "Tooth Fairy" remind her what her gig is."

Sigh. I just didn't grow up in a fairy/santa/easter bunny kind of home.

Love the photo!

Another budding writer in the family? Only his genre may be crime novels.

Just let's see if anyone dares tries to underpay him when he grows up!

Did you give him a ten?

Be still my heart. I "collect" smiles and this one is already story in my memory bank. Thanks for sharing, Holly.

P.S. Um, "story" = "stored."

I'm not much for kids
but I sure like this guys
notes to you (I'm thinking of
some of the older ones he gave
you that you posted months
and months ago.) What a character!

What a great story. Our tooth fairy had memory lapses, too. One daughter left the tooth Fairy a note: Dear T.F.: Please leave my tooth. It is very special." That time the TF remembered, and she complied.

Thanks for your comments everyone!

P.S. I gave him $5 Spyscribbler.
That's what his brother got when the TF forgot to show up, so I
couldn't break from tradition :)

That's the funniest thing I've read in a loooong time! You've got quite the kid on your hands!!!

It sounds like something my red head would pull - if she could ever bring herself to actually put a tooth under her pillow. ;) Except that her cynical self would address it to "Mom"!

Oh, that note is priceless!

My daughter was a tough case. She was such a light sleeper she'd wake up if you coughed at the other end of the house. I finally rigged a little silk pouch beside her bed and told her to put the tooth inside. The tooth fairy was delighted because it's not a good idea to wake up the little ones.

Scheduling problems is always a good excuse!

This is TOO funny! Love the blog...gives me an idea of what I have to look forward to. My son is 3. He's still rather deferential to Santa Claus. Hasn't yet heard of the tooth fairy.

That is hilarious. Thanks for the laugh! I am going on day 4 of forgetting and I like that "paying double" deal. Kids are so fresh!
